Italian Greyhounds are elegant, slender dogs with looks similar to a standard Greyhound's, but in miniature. The Italian Greyhound has more curves and has been said to have an "S" shape. Their coat is smooth, glossy, and can come in a variety of shades. The head is narrow with a very fine muzzle, and the ears are softly folded and set high on the head. The spine slopes gently, and there is a defined tuck-up in the loins. The gait is high stepping and free with good drive. I read somewhere that Italian Greyhound owners must be prepared to manage the mismatch between reality and the inner workings of this dog’s mind. This is so true. The Italian Greyhound is self-important and all about fun! Even the best trained dog can forget all previous training if they see a rabbit dash by! Owners must be aware that all thoughts are lost during the chase. For this reason, they require fenced yards for roaming and to be on leashes in public. Italian Greyhounds also believe they can fly! They will jump in single bounds from any high surface, so teaching them to use stairs and not jump is important. Extra care with puppies can save them from injuries- including leg breaks. This doesn't mean to coddle them outside in fenced areas. Running will help their muscles strengthen! Potty training takes work, but it is entirely possible. Italian Greyhounds love nothing more than being toasty warm, so cold rainy days can have them deciding potty indoors is best- oops! While these wonderful dogs may not be the perfect fit for everyone, they do make wonderful family members to those who have educated themselves on the breed and delicate toy dogs in general.
